First Friday Find: Chatbooks

I hope my readers are aware that I come up with these First Friday Finds (FFF) just by pure discovery.  There are no companies trying to get me to endorse their products or services.  To know I’m speaking the truth, you only need look at how few people come through this site.  It wouldn’t be worth their time.  That being said, I am completely stoked about this month’s find.

I found out about Chatbooks through friends of mine who posted about their personal chatbooks on Instagram.  Basically, it’s a company that takes your Instagram photos and puts them in to a 6″x 6″ photobook that’s processed on 100# glossy photo paper.  This product is called the Instagram Series.  The best part is that it’s only $6!  To my understanding, they’ll ship you a new book and charge you $6 every time that you have 60 additional pictures on your Instagram.  I believe you can omit pictures, if you’d like.  Each page includes the date, the picture, and the caption.  The comments are not included.  I love this concept so much because it’s a perfect way to do some non-traditional journaling, if you’re not good at writing things down.

(Photo found on Chatbooks.com)

They also have this way cool thing called Chatbook Series.  If I understand it correctly, you create this chat and multiple people can text pictures with captions to the chat.  Then, when it reaches 60 pictures, it goes to print.  This is an awesome idea for creating a photo album that includes extended family.  I would love to do this with my siblings so that my kids could see more pictures of their cousins who live far away.

Now, if it sounds like I don’t have firsthand experience with this find, you are correct.  Unfortunately, they currently only offer this service to iPhone users.  But, have no fear, it appears as though it will be made available to Android users THIS month!  How fitting to share it for this month’s find, eh?

For those who may already have their hands on their very own Chatbook, please share your thoughts!  I’m so excited to get some nice little photo albums of my digital prints.  I want my kids to have easier access to all of the pictures from the fun experiences we’ve had.  I feel like it helps bring to mind how truly blessed we are as a family!

First Friday Find: SPLAT!

I know, I know, this should hardly be considered a First Friday post, as I am barely getting this in before midnight.  I’ll just pull the New-Baby-Card and we’ll call it good.  This month’s find is just a silly little toy that our family fell in love with when we were at the County Fair this past week.  Speaking of the County Fair, how are you doing on your Ultimate Summer Bucket List?  We hit our half-way mark this past week and attending the county fair helped make that possible.

But, I digress.

We came across this way cool toy called SPLAT!  I really can’t describe how cool it is in words.  I just have to show you video so you can see it for yourself.

As I mentioned, we got ours at the fair, but you can get it on Amazon by clicking SPLAT above.  It looks like it’s cheaper on-line than what we paid for it, which seems typical.  I noticed the reviews on-line speak about the product bursting fairly easily.  We have not had that issue at all (at least not yet) and our whole family has been making the most of the toy.  It just doesn’t get old to watch it transform from flat to spherical.

Happy playing!

First Friday Find: Goodreads!

Summer is such a beautiful time of year!  I know I’m enjoying it even more now that I live in a place that has changing seasons.  It’s fun to see our little vacation town come alive with different activities.  I love how summer can be equal parts active and relaxing.  One minute we’re off kayaking on the lake and the next we can be sunbathing and reading along the shoreline.  This is why I thought it would be fun to share the site Goodreads with you all for July’s First Friday Find.

I’ll be honest, Goodreads is not a recent find for me.  In fact, according to my profile, I joined the site in April 2013, one month prior to starting this blog.  I know many are already familiar with this website, but for those that aren’t let me share with you what it’s all about.  In short, it’s a free website where you can keep track of the books you have read, want to read, and are currently reading.  This is excellent for me because I often hear about books that I want to read, then I tend to forget about said books once I finish my current book.  Another feature it offers is being a search engine for books.  This means that I can get all the details on a book quickly, including readers reviews.  This is especially helpful because I really like to know how many pages are in a book.  I’m the first to admit that a thick book is difficult for me to commit to.  Plus, I like that I can get a rough idea of how good the book really is based on their 5 star rating system.  While I enjoy reading, I don’t always get an opportunity to sit down to a book for one reason or another.  So, when I do, I want the book to be worth my time and Goodreads helps make that possible.
Another big plus to the website is that it creates a community of readers.  I like that I can see what my friends are reading and what they’re finding to be a good book.  I get notifications now and again about latest best sellers or what my friend’s are adding to their book lists and it gets me excited about reading.  Another way that it gets me pumped up to read is by tracking my book genres and ratings for books that I have already read and then recommending me new books.  Overall, I find it to be a really user-friendly site that helps promote a world of reading.
Now that I’ve hopefully convinced you of how awesome this website is, let me share with you one book from each of my four list categories on Goodreads: Read, Currently Reading, Want to Read, and Children’s.
READ – Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson.  While I have read several good books, I feel this is a good book to share for a summer read.  It’s a light and easy romantic read that is perfect to enjoy while sunbathing or lying in the shade of a tree.

CURRENTLY READING – The Child Whisperer, The Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, and Cooperative Children by Carol Tuttle.  I would not be reading this book had my friend not sent it to me for Mother’s Day.  Parenting books are just hard for me to get excited about for some reason.  However, my friend kept pushing me to read this one and I’m definitely glad that I am.  I’m not 100% sold on everything this book says, but it has been a very eye-opening and thought provoking book to read.  I find myself wanting other parents to read it with me so we can discuss it together.

WANT TO READ – Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.  You can read more information regarding this book here on Goodreads.  I have heard nothing but great things about this book.  It’s a non-fiction book based on the life of Louie Zamperini who was an American WWII prisoner of war survivor.  Zamperini actually just passed away yesterday at the age of 97.  A full life for certain and one that I’m excited to read more about.

CHILDREN’S – What Animals Really Like by Fiona Robinson.  The default categories on Goodreads does not include a Children’s list.  I have just grown to love children’s picture books so much that I had to add a list to note my personal favorites.  Some children’s books are so pathetic I hardly feel like they should have been allowed to go to print.  Then there are others that are either so clever or poignant that I feel every adult and child should read them.  What Animals Really Like is one of those darling books that just makes you happy to read it to little kids.  You may recall, from my post called Breaking Through Boredom, that I read it to my daughter’s Kindergarten class on her birthday and it was a hit!

So, there you have it!  Some good reads to add to your Goodreads account!  And, since this is being posted on Independence Day, think of this First Friday Find as my personal appreciation and support for the freedom of press!

Happy Fourth of July!

First Friday Find: Roadtrippers

Summer is upon us.  My kids have less than a week to go of school and our Summer Bucket List is already proudly placed on our fridge.  While we don’t have any summer road trip plans in the works, I am super excited to share this website and app that I learned about with all of you.  The website is called Roadtrippers.  There is also a free app, available on Android and iPhone, that serves as a companion to the website.

The concept of Roadtrippers is simple: Make going from Point A to Point B more exciting.  For instance, having moved from Southern California to Central Oregon, I have acquired a standby road trip route to visit friends and family.  We’ve made the 15-hour trek a few times, but I have yet to do it with this handy app in my pocket.  I decided to check out the website just now and put in my starting and ending destination.  Having done this drive a few times, I already knew of a few key spots along the way.  The website will plot out most anything you’re hoping to find, such as nature spots, historic sites, attractions, and more.  In doing my usual route through Roadtrippers, I just learned about Castle Crags State Park, which is along the way.  I like that the website even takes me to a page outlining the details of the location and rating it on their Rad-o-meter!  But I think the most helpful feature of all is the “Food + Drink” search.  There are a couple long stretches of road when you ask yourself, “Can we really hold our kids off until the next big city for a food and potty break?”  This website and app seem to be a great service in that manner.

As I am a lover of road trips, Roadtrippers is making me anxious to hit the road and discover something new to be seen!  But, alas, my pregnancy takes priority.  For those of you who do have plans to hit the road this summer, please check out this site and app and let me know if it’s as cool as it sounds.  Happy travels this summer!

First Friday Find: This Is Why I’m Broke

Sometimes I wonder if my husband and I should both write on this blog.  I use so many of his ideas and suggestions in life.  He’s a fun guy to have around and I thought this month’s First Friday Find should be another fun site that he’s told me (and most every guy he comes in contact with) all about.  The site is called ThisIsWhyImBroke.com.  They refer to themselves as the Internet’s Mall.  My husband likens them to the Sky Mall magazines you can peruse on an airplane, except for this is at your fingertips on-line.

It’s similar to Pinterest in the sense that the site is a collection of product links that lead you back to the original seller.  They’re constantly updating the site with the most random things.  I can’t tell you how many times my husband has started a conversation with, “I saw this cool thing today on This Is Why I’m Broke….”  He’s right though, there are some pretty cool things on there.  Of course, there is also a lot of junk and overpriced stuff as well.  I thought I would give you a taste of the top five products that piqued my interest on their page of newly posted items.  This way you can get a glimpse of how widespread their collection really is on the site.

Herb Stripper

Hat Brim Clip-on Light

It’s no wonder my husband checks the site regularly.  I found myself continually scrolling to check out all of the cool gadgets and gizmos.  I think I may need to get my hands on the Herb Stripper myself.  It would help during all those times when I realize I want to add cilantro to my salad at the last minute.
Hope you enjoyed this month’s First Friday Find!  Be careful not to go too broke when checking out the site!

First Friday Find: True Facts

I thought this First Friday Find for April was apropros based on my previous post Living a Life Based on Truths.  It is based on truth and it makes me laugh, which you may recall is a rarity lately.  My husband stumbled across a series of YouTube videos called True Facts.  Each video is less than 5 minutes and covers true facts about a particular animal.  The narrator is hilarious.  As a warning, I would give the clips a PG-13 Rating.  We don’t watch them with our kids around, but I don’t find it vulgar either.

To get you started in the right direction, may I suggest True Facts About The Tarsier and True Facts About The Mantis Shrimp?  There’s really not much more to share on this month’s First Friday Find, except for, “You’re welcome.”

First Friday Find: Sometimes I’m a Snob

I am far from materialistic.  I do not own any designer jeans.  Frankly, I don’t even think I can name a designer jean if my life depended on it.  I wear make-up so infrequently that when I do my children ask what’s going on.  I do not have any fancy purses or accessories.  Come to think of it, I don’t think I have any high-end brand name apparel of any sort, period.  As a matter of fact, I recently got teased for my outdated wallet.  I recall buying it in my late teens, which means it’s at least 15 years old; yet I have never consider it as out-of-style.  It’s functional and that’s all I need.  That all being said, I am still quite snobby when it comes to particular items.  These are the items I wish to share with you today for March’s First Friday Find(s).  These are the items that if I could be a salesperson for them, I would sell the heck out of them.  Which is saying a lot, if you recall the Commercial Break in my post Acquired Tastes Not Required.

Let me start with my absolute top product.  The product that I will never stop using: Dove soap.  I’ll take it in liquid form or bar form, it makes no difference.  I have loved this soap since my childhood.  I thought all soaps were created equal until I found myself using someone else’s soap on a sleepover or during hotel stays.  This is not the case.  Dove stands above all the rest.  Trust me, I’ve been forced to try my fair share of body soaps through the years.  But no other soap compares in providing the same kind of softness to my skin without leaving residue behind.  Love. It.

Another thing that I am a snob about is raisins.  This one makes my husband laugh since I don’t even really care for raisins in the first place.  It’s not that I dislike them, I just don’t think to sit down to a box of them.  However, if I am going to eat raisins, the only option is Sun Maid Raisins.  I have undergone a rigorous taste test to prove that Sun Maid Raisins are way better than any generic brand you’ll save your pennies on.  But, as previously mentioned, I’m not a huge raisin fan to begin with, despite my pro-raisin post on Meaningful Traditions.  So, at the risk of being a hypocrite, I give to you a funny I have found during my many hours on Pinterest:

Another snobby product I support is high-end hair conditioners.  I will gladly put Head & Shoulders in my hair for shampooing purposes, but I am adamant about putting high quality conditioner in my hair.  I’m talking about the conditioners that can only be purchased in a salon.  I switch it up from time to time, but right now I’m loving Evo Normal Persons Conditioner.  My hair feels silky smooth and light.  Plus, the intense smell of peppermint awakens my senses and eases my bouts with nausea during this pregnancy.

I have a few other products that I won’t settle for generic brands on, but I’ll stop myself now before I sound too much like an infomercial.  I would love to hear what products you find yourself being a bit of a “snob” on.  As I mentioned before, I am not materialistic, but some things are just better paying top dollar for top quality, while other items are the same exact thing just with a different label on them.  Share your product finds below in our comments.

First Friday Find: Love Journals

This is not a recent find for me, but it is a pertinent find for this month and may be new for our readers.  Years ago, I read this excellent idea about using Love Journals in place of greeting cards with your spouse or loved ones.  The idea was ingenious in my eyes!

I started to implement it right away with my husband for Valentine’s Day.  I got my hands on a notebook that had an extra slot on the inside.  In the slot, I gathered all of my past love notes to him.  Now all of our notes are in one convenient location.  Then I kicked off the notebook with Valentine’s stickers and a love note.  My husband appreciated the sentiment and, shortly thereafter, he got me a Love Journal in which he leaves me sweet messages as we come upon each holiday.  Sometimes, we even give surprise notes of appreciation and adoration between holidays.  It’s fun to have all of our love notes in one spot and the convenience is a definite perk!

Being a Mother to young children, I rarely get the chance to peruse a card aisle anymore nor do I enjoy the high price tags for the cards worth sending.  I guess I’ve become a bit of a curmudgeon that way.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy sending a note out of the blue or finding the perfect card for someone, but this expectation that we need to buy cards to express our love each holiday sort of rubs me the wrong way.  It feels like one more To-Do on my list.  Ever since we got these journals, all I need to find time for is expressing my heartfelt feelings.  Plus, when it comes to the love I have for my husband, in particular, there has yet to be a greeting card that can express how I feel better than I can.

We’ve had our journals for a few years now and I honestly have no idea where we purchased them.  I’m including a couple links for notebooks that I thought would serve as cool Love Journals.  BookFactory® Notebook sells one in multiple colors.  This one is very similar to the one my husband bought for me.  We prefer blank pages, but I also found this really cool lined page journal you could use called Red Embossed Heart Writing Journal.  Both of these are fairly priced and would be a great way to ignite a loving tradition.

Hopefully, you will find Love Journals as beneficial as we have in our home.  We’ve saved money, we’ve saved time sneaking off to the card aisle, we’ve centralized all of our notes for one another, and we’ve let our love flow more sincerely.  Basically, Love Journals have been a blessing to us.  I hope they become a treasured gift in your home as well!

First Friday Find: Airplane Mode

My 23-month-old son can barely say a handful of words and yet he has made phone calls, sent text messages, and left Voxers for my friends and family on numerous occasions.  I don’t worry about my friends and family getting random communication from my son, but when I arrived at my hairstylist’s studio and she asked me if I had a Special Needs child, I realized my son’s calling habits were getting out of hand.

The phone calls got so frequent that my Dad and Step-Mom tried to divert my son’s attention with a Thomas the Train cell phone.  It never works that way though, does it?  Those little stinkers know the real thing when they see it.

I was at a loss as to what to do about my son’s rampant communication efforts with my phone.  I have no problem with him playing with my phone.  It’s all the havoc that he causes once he has it that concerns me.  I have an App on my phone called Toddler Lock, which I highly recommend, but he has grown tired of that ploy as well.

That’s why a simple interaction with my friend the other day was so eye-opening to me.  My friend offered up her phone to keep my son entertained and I tried to caution her about his calling habits and she simply responded, “No, it’s okay, I’ll put it on Airplane Mode.”  Whaaaaat?!  Why did I never think of this?

Sometimes I’m such an inside of the box kind of girl that I don’t even contemplate looking outside of it.  I just assumed Airplane Mode is used for when you’re on an airplane.  Case closed.  The whole concept of Airplane Mode saving my son from communications while on solid ground was mind-boggling to me.  Now when he takes my phone, I simply turn my settings to Airplane Mode and all communications and radio signal options are cut from the phone’s capabilities.

So, while it’s not an earth-shattering find, it is a find worth sharing.  Even if there is just one Mom out there that can rest easy knowing her toddler is not making calls to her husband while she’s explaining said husband’s upcoming surprise party to her friend, then this post has made a difference.

First Friday Find: Scoutfit

As I type this snuggled up on my couch with the snow falling steadily down, I’m appreciating on-line shopping that much more.  It’s Christmas time and despite my last post being anti-materialism, I do purchase gifts for our kids and clothes for the whole family.  Admittedly, I have begun to rely heavily on hand-me-downs and Goodwill trips to purchase these items, mainly because I hate how outrageous prices can be.  That’s why I’m so excited to share this month’s First Friday Find called Scoutfit.

Scoutfit is an on-line shopping tool that does the deal hunting for you.  I see it as Pinterest meets Amazon.  It’s similar to Pinterest in the sense that they have a button you can add to your toolbar that you merely click on when you’ve found something that you’re interested in purchasing.  For instance, I needed a clothing item that could be found on multiple sites.  I tagged the item when I was on Nordstrom.com then I told Scoutfit what price I was willing to pay for the item.  Scoutfit then does the searching for me across all the websites to find me the best deal on that same item and brand.  Sure enough, it found the item at the price I wanted.

While the site is mostly tailored to finding deals on apparel, it will do searches for virtually any item on your wish list.  For instance, I’ve been wanting to get a train set for my little guy for Christmas.  I just found one that I really liked on Amazon, pressed my Scoutfit button, set my desired amount to pay for the item, and now Scoutfit will be busily working to find that price on-line while I wrap up this blog entry.

The best part is that Scoutfit does not just help you with the deals you are hunting for on-line, it also helps bring deals that are beyond belief directly to your board.  I went on Scoutfit the other night and it was listing some ridiculously good sale prices for items at Anthrolpologie.  Anthropologie is a clothing store that I adore, but can never afford.  Scoutfit was showing items priced at $9.95 from Anthropologie that were once over $128.

The drawback, but future pay-off, with Scoutfit is that it’s an on-line shopping tool that’s still in it’s early stages.  This is a shortcoming now because the site still has some kinks to work out.  I did have trouble finding those Anthropologie deals when I went back to share them with a friend.  However, the outlook is bright.  Because it is a new site with such great potential, it can only get better!  The more customer feedback they receive and the greater audience they reach will lead to bigger improvements in creating an on-line tool that will positively impact your on-line shopping experience.

As we are now officially in the Christmas season, I encourage you to give Scoutfit a try and see the time and money it can save you this holiday season!  Happy on-line shopping!
